Would you drive 136.8km for lunch? You would if it is good enough, right? So, off we drove once again, from Kyoto to Taisho Ward in Osaka, and Bongu. It had been two years since my last visit, and nearly 15 since my first. Bongu is a tiny place, a former art studio, and it is always full. We arrived nearly at 2pm, and still had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. But we never mind waiting for Bongu’s soba.
There are two types of soba at Bongu, hosogiri the thinly cut version, and futogiri, literally the ‘fat slices’ type. Pictured here is the hosogiri. I am a big fan of the latter, but to my surprise the thicker noodles – and they are indeed super fat – have many adherents. This texture and this taste, you’ll only find at Bongu!
My first order, hosogiri. On the table was a choice of salt from Italy, Mongolia, the Noto Peninsula’s Suzu, etc. They recommended us to add a pinch of salt to the rich, white, thick sobayu water which they serve afterwards.
And next up, kamojirusoba, soba with roast duck and negi Welsh onions. Once again I opted to have it with the hosogiri soba.
Whilst the cold soba is most excellent, this version, with the soba dipped in the hot soup is the one I really love. I always season it with liberal helpings of Bongu’s choice konasanshou powdered Szechuan pepper.
Well, that was just the job. Gochisousama!

Here is the tabelog link, if you care for such things (I have strong reservations about web-based reviews; some awful places receive 5 stars; some great ones just 2 or 3. Perhaps people think the same about my reviews? Shinjite kudasai!).
