On Sunday I finally got to go to the morning markets up in North Kyoto in Ohara and Shizuhara villages. Spring has well and truly sprung, and it is sansai mountain veggie season. Here are the kogomi (‘fiddleheads’, or ‘Ostrich fern’) and gigantic ginger that I bought in Ohara.

It was drizzling when I left, so I put on my wellies. My shopping bag is full of veggies and, er, sweetstuffs. This morning market is full of irresistible temptations.

Home-made pudding. They also sell carefully crafted Choux à la Crème.

The lady radish seller was so cute! Everybody is so friendly here. It wouldn’t surprise me if I become a regular Sunday morning visitor.

500g!!The mother of all ginger – half a kilo – from Kochi. Should last me a while!

The cheery veggie salesman.

I bought sansai from the lady on the left.

Just placed in the basket like this, the mountain veggies look so great.

Next we drove over the hill from Ohara into Shizuhara.

This is Sumioka-san, my friend Juri’s husband. Together they run the vegetarian and wholegrain restaurant ‘Millet’, open at weekends only, also in the village of Shizuhara.

Breakfast was freshly-brewed coffee, and a sandwich made with bread from Sumioka-san’s stone oven.

The potato salad sandwich and coffee went together nicely.

You can’t get much fresher than this; veggies uprooted to order from the neighbouring plot while you wait!
